Ingredients

2 cup all-purpose flour

¾ cup granulated sugar

½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder

1 tsp baking powder

1 tsp baking soda

1 tsp kosher salt

2 large eggs

1 cup milk

1 tsp vanilla extract

3 Tbsp unsalted butter, melted

¾ cup powdered sugar

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 325°F. Spray a mini muffin pan with non-stick baking spray to prevent sticking.

  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, unsweetened cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and kosher salt until well combined and free of lumps.

  3. In another bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, and melted butter until smooth and combined.

  4. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredient mixture and beat with an electric mixer on medium speed for 2-3 minutes until the batter is smooth and well incorporated.

  5. Carefully fill each mini muffin cup about halfway full with the chocolate batter.

  6. Bake for 7-9 minutes, until a toothpick inserted into a donut hole comes out clean and the tops are set. The donut holes should be tender and slightly springy.

  7. Allow the donut holes to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes, then carefully turn them out onto a wire rack to cool completely, approximately 5 minutes.

  8. Once cooled, dip the top of each donut hole into the melted butter and then roll in the powdered sugar until fully coated.

  9. Serve and enjoy the soft, chocolatey donut holes while they are at their best.

This recipe hits the essential sweet spot for a weeknight Charlotte kitchen: every ingredient is a staple at every major grocery chain, and you can build it from what most pantries already hold. The cost per serving lands around $0.25–$0.30, driven only by butter and eggs, making it genuinely cheap for a homemade treat. The 22-minute claim is honest for mixing and baking but glosses over cooling time (add 10 minutes minimum before rolling in powdered sugar), so budget 30 minutes if you want them ready to eat. These are a casual, non-fussy family project that reheats fine in the microwave and actually improve on day two as the coating softens.
