Ingredients

1 cup unsalted butter, softened

6 1/2 cups powdered sugar, sifted

1/4 cup milk

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 package unsweetened Kool-Aid drink mix

Directions

  1. Pour the milk into a small bowl and stir in the unsweetened Kool-Aid drink mix until fully dissolved and no lumps remain.

  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the softened butter, milk-Kool-Aid mixture, salt, and half of the sifted powdered sugar.

  3. Using an electric mixer on low speed, beat the mixture until all ingredients are combined and smooth.

  4. Gradually add the remaining powdered sugar while mixing on low speed until fully incorporated.

  5. Increase the mixer speed to high and whip the frosting for 5 minutes until light, fluffy, and well-aerated.

  6. Stop the mixer and scrape down the sides and bottom of the bowl with a spatula to ensure all ingredients are fully mixed.

  7. Mix on low speed just until combined, then the frosting is ready to use for decorating cakes and cupcakes.

This frosting is cheap and ubiquitously available—every Walmart, Food Lion, and ALDI in Charlotte stocks butter, powdered sugar, milk, and Kool-Aid packets, with zero special trips required. At roughly 15–20 cents per serving, it's a genuinely economical choice for frosting a sheet cake. The stated 45 minutes is honest for creaming and mixing, and the recipe is utterly forgiving and hands-off once you start it. The only real drawback is that while it works perfectly fine on cupcakes and sheet cakes that get eaten the same day or stored at room temperature, it doesn't freeze well and can weep if left in the heat, making it less ideal for a make-ahead dessert or summer party.
