Ingredients
4 oz bacon bits
1 fresh jalapeño, finely chopped
1 tablespoon butter
1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
2 cups heavy cream
2 cups shredded cheddar cheese, mild or sharp
4 fresh turkey burgers
4 burger buns
Directions
Remove the turkey burgers from their packaging. Sprinkle the bacon bits evenly over both sides of each burger, pressing them gently into the meat so they adhere well. Heat a cast iron skillet or indoor grill over medium-high heat. Once hot, place the burgers on the cooking surface and cook for 5-6 minutes per side until the internal temperature reaches 165°F, ensuring they are cooked through completely.
While the burgers are cooking, prepare the sauce. In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the flour and whisk continuously for 2-3 minutes until the raw flour taste disappears and the mixture is smooth and fragrant.
Add the finely chopped jalapeño to the roux and stir well. Slowly pour in the heavy cream while whisking constantly to prevent lumps from forming. Continue to whisk until the sauce is smooth.
Gradually add the shredded cheddar cheese to the cream mixture, stirring continuously until all the cheese is melted and the sauce is creamy and smooth. Keep the sauce warm over low heat until ready to serve.
Place each cooked turkey burger on a burger bun. Generously spoon the warm jalapeño cheddar sauce over the top of each burger and serve immediately.
Comments
This burger lands well for a weeknight in Charlotte: bacon, jalapeño, cheddar, and turkey are all standard at Harris Teeter, Food Lion, Walmart, or ALDI, with no special trips required. The stated 15 minutes is honest for assembly, though you'll need to budget an extra five to ten minutes for cooking the bacon and patties if you're not doing this step by step. At roughly $3.50 per serving for the protein, cheese, and bread, it's reasonable for a casual dinner. The main caveat is that this is a same-night dish—the burger won't reheat well—and the heavy cream suggests a sauce component, which adds a richness that tips this toward occasional indulgence rather than rotation.
