A refreshing homemade strawberry lemonade made with fresh lemons and ripe strawberries. Simply puree the berries with lemon juice and sugar, mix with cool water, and chill before serving. An optional splash of rum elevates it for adult guests.

Ingredients

10 fresh strawberries, hulled

fresh lemon juice (from about 4 large lemons)

½ cup granulated sugar

1¾ cups cold water

ice cubes

dark rum, optional (for serving to adults)

Directions

  1. Hull the strawberries by removing the green leafy tops. Add them to a food processor and puree until completely smooth.

  2. Juice the fresh lemons using a citrus juicer or by hand, and add the lemon juice to the food processor with the strawberries.

  3. Add the sugar and puree for 15–20 seconds until well combined. For a smoother drink with fewer seeds and pulp, pour the mixture through cheesecloth into a bowl, pressing gently to extract all the liquid.

  4. Transfer the strawberry-lemon mixture to a pitcher and stir in the cold water until well blended.

  5. Add ice cubes to the pitcher and refrigerate until thoroughly chilled, about 30 minutes. If serving to adults, pour individual glasses and add a splash of dark rum to each, then stir well.

Strawberries and lemons are both readily available year-round at every major Charlotte grocer, making this dead simple on shopping logistics. The ingredient list is bare-bones and cheap—figure under two dollars for a batch of three servings. The 45-minute timer is honest enough if you count chilling, though active prep is five minutes tops, which sets expectations right. It's a refreshing summer drink that reheats poorly but works perfectly for a weeknight gathering, though you'll want to make it fresh to order.
