A refreshing and elegant sangria made with dry red wine, fresh citrus, apple, and a splash of brandy. Fresh fruit infuses the drink with natural flavors while it chills, creating a perfectly balanced beverage ideal for gatherings and warm days. Sparkling water added just before serving adds a light fizz.

Ingredients

1 apple, cored and sliced thin

1 lemon, sliced thin

1 orange, sliced thin

1 bottle (750 ml) dry red wine, such as Rioja, Merlot, or Cabernet Sauvignon

1/2 cup brandy or liqueur

1/2 cup fresh orange juice

2 tablespoons sugar

1 cup sparkling water

Ice cubes for serving

Directions

  1. Core the apple and slice it thinly. Slice the lemon and orange thinly as well, keeping the skin on for visual appeal and added flavor.

  2. Place all the sliced fruit into a large pitcher or beverage container.

  3. Add the sugar to the pitcher with the fruit.

  4. Pour the fresh orange juice and the entire bottle of red wine into the pitcher over the fruit and sugar.

  5. Add the brandy or liqueur to the pitcher.

  6. Stir gently to combine all ingredients, making sure the sugar dissolves completely.

  7. Cover the pitcher and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight, allowing the fruit flavors to infuse into the wine.

  8. Just before serving, stir in the sparkling water to add carbonation. Pour into glasses filled with ice cubes and include some of the infused fruit slices from the pitcher in each serving.

Every ingredient is stocked year-round at any Charlotte grocer—apples, citrus, red wine, brandy, orange juice, sugar, sparkling water, and ice pose no sourcing challenge. The stated 495 minutes (8 hours 15 minutes) is honest: it's almost entirely idle chilling time with maybe ten minutes of actual chopping and stirring, making this perfect for advance prep before an event. At roughly $3 to $4 per serving depending on wine choice, it's reasonable for a party drink, and it reheats poorly but doesn't need to since it's served chilled. The only mild friction is that brandy is a liquor aisle stop, but any of those six chains carries it, so no special trip is required.
