Ingredients
3/4 pound flank or sirloin steak, thinly sliced against the grain
1 teaspoon soy sauce
1 teaspoon Chinese rice cooking wine or dry sherry
1/2 teaspoon cornstarch
1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1 pound fresh broccoli florets, cut into bite-sized pieces
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 tablespoon water
Directions
In a small bowl, combine the soy sauce, rice wine, cornstarch, and black pepper. Toss the thinly sliced beef with this marinade and let sit for 5–10 minutes while you prepare the broccoli.
Cut the broccoli into bite-sized florets and mince the garlic. Have all ingredients ready near your cooking station.
Heat a large skillet or wok over high heat until very hot, about 2 minutes. Add the marinated beef in a single layer and sear for 2–3 minutes without stirring, until the bottom is well-browned. Stir and cook another 1–2 minutes until the beef reaches an internal temperature of 145°F (medium-rare). Transfer to a plate.
In the same skillet, add the minced garlic and stir constantly for 20–30 seconds until fragrant. Add the broccoli florets and 1 tablespoon of water. Cover and steam for 3–4 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the broccoli is tender-crisp.
Return the cooked beef to the skillet with the broccoli and toss everything together for 1–2 minutes to combine flavors. Serve immediately.
Comments
This is a solid weeknight stir-fry that checks most boxes for a Charlotte kitchen. All ingredients are common and available at every major chain—Harris Teeter, Food Lion, Kroger, Walmart, and ALDI all stock beef, broccoli, soy sauce, and garlic year-round, with no special trips required. The cost per serving runs roughly $3–$4 depending on beef grade, which is reasonable for a dinner. The stated 30 minutes is honest if you buy pre-cut broccoli or work quickly; from whole broccoli and raw beef, add 10 minutes of prep. This is a true family dish that handles four people without fuss and requires active attention only during the final 5–8 minute cook, so it suits busy evenings. The only meaningful drawback is that stir-fries do not reheat well—the broccoli turns soft and the texture flattens—so plan to eat it all the same night rather than build leftovers into your week.
