Ingredients

18 ounces One 18-ounce package firm tofu

2 green onions, chopped

2 cloves garlic, minced

2 tablespoons soy sauce

1 tablespoon asian sesame oil

1 tablespoon toasted sesame seeds

1 teaspoon korean chile powder

1 tablespoon vegetable oil

Directions

  1. Remove the tofu from its package and drain any liquid. Wrap the tofu block in a clean kitchen towel or paper towels and place on a cutting board. Weight down the tofu with a heavy pan or cast iron skillet for 30 minutes to press out excess moisture. This step is essential for achieving a crispy exterior when pan-frying.

  2. After pressing, unwrap the tofu and cut it into ¾-inch cubes using a sharp knife. Pat any remaining surface moisture with fresh paper towels.

  3. In a small bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, minced garlic, Korean chile powder, and sesame oil until combined. Set the seasoning mixture aside.

  4. Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat until it shimmers and is nearly smoking, about 2 minutes.

  5. Carefully add the tofu cubes to the hot oil in a single layer, working in batches if necessary to avoid crowding the pan. Allow them to sit undisturbed for 4–5 minutes until the bottom develops a light golden crust.

  6. Gently stir and flip the tofu pieces, then continue cooking for another 4–5 minutes until a second side becomes golden and crispy. Repeat this process with the remaining sides, cooking for about 15–20 minutes total until the tofu has a golden, crispy exterior on all sides.

  7. Pour the reserved seasoning mixture over the cooked tofu cubes and stir gently to coat evenly. Cook for 1–2 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce is absorbed and the tofu is heated through.

  8. Remove from heat and fold in the chopped green onions. Transfer to a serving platter and sprinkle the toasted sesame seeds over the top. Serve warm as a main course.
