Ingredients
1 (12 oz) Certified Angus Beef Strip Steak
Salt to taste
Black pepper to taste
3 sandwich buns
Sliced cheese of your choice
Sliced onions
Sliced fresh tomatoes
Brown mustard
Directions
Preheat your grill to medium-high heat and allow it to reach temperature.
Pat the strip steak dry and season both sides generously with salt and black pepper.
Place the seasoned steak on the hot grill and cook for 5-8 minutes. Flip once and continue cooking until the internal temperature reaches 145°F when measured with a meat thermometer, approximately 5-7 minutes more.
Remove the steak from the grill and place on a cutting board. Let it rest for 5 minutes to retain its juices.
While the steak rests, lightly grill the buns cut-side down for about 1-2 minutes until lightly toasted.
Slice the rested steak thinly across the grain.
Assemble the sandwiches: spread brown mustard on the toasted buns, layer sliced steak, cheese, onions, and tomato slices, then top with the other half of the bun. Serve immediately.
Comments
This recipe hits the Charlotte basics well: strip steak, cheddar or American cheese, onions, and tomatoes are standard at every major grocer from Harris Teeter to Walmart, with no special stops required. The real catch is that 20 minutes is optimistic—grilling steak to a proper sear, resting it, toasting buns, and caramelizing onions realistically takes 30 to 35 minutes, not counting prep, which adds another 5 to 10. Cost per serving runs around $8 to $10 depending on steak quality and cheese choice, which is reasonable for a dinner but not cheap. It's a one-off meal with no practical leftovers since the bread soaks through, making it a true weeknight-only dish that demands your attention at the grill.
