Ingredients

2 teaspoons olive oil

3 garlic cloves, minced

1 medium onion, diced

Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

1 tablespoon tomato paste

1 pound lean ground beef (at least 90 percent lean)

2 tablespoons chili powder

1 teaspoon ground cumin

15 ounces One 15-ounce can no-salt-added tomato sauce

1 cup low-sodium chicken broth

3 tablespoons barbecue sauce

Directions

  1. Heat the olive oil in a large stockpot or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add the minced garlic and diced onion, then season with salt and pepper. Cook for 3 to 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onion becomes soft and fragrant.

  2. Stir in the tomato paste and mix thoroughly to combine with the vegetables. Add the lean ground beef and cook for about 5 minutes, stirring frequently and breaking the meat into small crumbles, until no pink remains.

  3. Sprinkle the chili powder and ground cumin over the meat mixture and stir well to ensure the spices are evenly distributed throughout.

  4. Pour in the tomato sauce and chicken broth, stirring to combine all ingredients. Reduce the heat to low and allow the chili to simmer gently, stirring occasionally, for 30 minutes.

  5. Stir in the barbecue sauce and simmer for an additional 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed. Serve hot.
