Cubed extra-firm tofu is pressed to remove excess moisture, then marinated in a savory-sweet blend of soy sauce, orange juice, and sesame oil. The tofu is baked until golden and crispy on the outside while remaining tender inside. This versatile dish works beautifully as a main course, served over rice or vegetables, and can be prepared ahead since it tastes even better after extended marinating.

Ingredients

1 pound Extra-firm tofu

2 tablespoons Low-sodium soy sauce

1 tablespoon Orange juice

2 teaspoons Sesame oil

1 teaspoon Canola oil

Cooking spray

Directions

  1. Slice the tofu into 1/2-inch-thick slabs. Arrange the slices on a stack of paper towels. Place additional paper towels on top and press firmly on the tofu for several minutes to extract as much water as possible. Repeat with fresh paper towels as needed until the tofu is no longer releasing significant moisture. Cut the pressed tofu into 3/4-inch cubes.

  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, orange juice, sesame oil, and canola oil until well combined. Add the tofu cubes and gently toss to coat evenly. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or a lid and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes. For best flavor, allow the tofu to marinate for up to 24 hours.

  3. Preheat the oven to 450°F. Lightly coat a large shallow baking dish with cooking spray. Pour the marinated tofu and any accumulated marinade into the prepared baking dish, spreading the tofu into a single even layer. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, until the tofu is golden brown and the edges are slightly crispy.

This is a weeknight workhorse disguised as a long recipe: the 465 minutes is almost pure marinating time, and active prep runs closer to 15 minutes. Tofu, soy sauce, sesame oil, and canola oil are stocked everywhere in Charlotte—Harris Teeter, Food Lion, Kroger, Walmart, and ALDI all carry them—and orange juice costs less than a dollar. At roughly $2 per serving for the tofu and oil, this is genuinely budget-friendly. The marinated tofu holds for days in the fridge and reheats beautifully, making it an excellent make-ahead option for busy families or meal prep. The only caveat is that you need to plan ahead: this is not a same-night impulse meal, so it rewards forethought more than spontaneity.
