Ingredients
1 container refrigerated croissant dough
2 containers chocolate pudding
1 container chocolate icing
8 clean wooden dowels or sticks
Directions
Remove the croissant dough from its container and unroll it flat according to the package directions.
Wrap a strip of the dough tightly around each clean wooden dowel or stick, spiral-wrapping from one end to the other.
Cook the dough-wrapped dowels over a campfire, in a skillet over direct heat, or on a BBQ grill, following the package temperature and time instructions, until the dough is golden brown and cooked through. Allow to cool slightly.
Once cooled enough to handle, carefully slide each cooked eclair off its dowel onto a plate.
Fill a plastic piping bag (or a small zip-lock bag with one corner snipped off) with chocolate pudding.
Pipe the chocolate pudding into the hollow center of each eclair.
Top each filled eclair generously with chocolate icing and serve immediately.
Comments
This is a clever workaround that trades homemade choux paste for store-bought croissant dough, cutting real prep time to maybe 15 minutes of hands-on work, though the stated 20 minutes is honest if you count cooling. All four ingredients are stocked at every major Charlotte chain—Harris Teeter, Food Lion, Publix, Walmart, ALDI, and Kroger—so no special trips needed. Cost per serving lands around $1.25 to $1.50 depending on which pudding and icing you choose, making this a genuine budget dessert. The catch is that croissant dough eclairs won't reheat well; they're best the same day and will lose their flake by morning, so plan this for a same-night treat or a party where they'll disappear fast.
