Ingredients
5 tablespoons butter
1 can cherry pie filling (about 21 ounces)
1 cup chocolate chips
3 eggs, beaten
1 chocolate fudge cake mix (about 15 ounces)
1 cup sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Directions
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13 inch cake pan with butter or cooking spray.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the chocolate fudge cake mix, beaten eggs, cherry pie filling (including juice), 5 tablespoons butter, chocolate chips, and vanilla extract. Stir until well combined and no streaks of dry cake mix remain.
Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan, spreading evenly. Bake for 25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out with moist crumbs (the cake should still appear slightly underbaked, which keeps it tender).
Remove the cake from the oven and allow it to cool for 10-15 minutes at room temperature.
While the cake cools, prepare the frosting. In a saucepan, combine 1 cup sugar and 5 additional tablespoons of butter over medium heat.
Bring the mixture to a rolling boil, stirring occasionally, and boil for exactly 1 minute. Remove from heat.
Immediately stir in 1 cup chocolate chips, stirring constantly until completely melted and smooth.
Pour the warm fudge frosting over the cooled cake and spread quickly to cover. Allow to set before serving.
