1 ounce bourbon or rye whiskey

1 ounce calvados

2 teaspoons white sugar

  3. Add the white sugar to the spirits in the mug and stir to dissolve.

  5. Sprinkle the ground mace over the surface of the drink and stir to distribute evenly.

  6. Serve immediately while hot.

Calvados—apple brandy—is the real constraint here; a Charlotte cook will need to visit a spirits retailer beyond a supermarket's liquor section, or order ahead. Milk, bourbon, and sugar are household staples at any chain. The drink itself is dead simple and honest about its 10 minutes, though mace (ground nutmeg's cousin) may require a spice-aisle hunt at Kroger or Harris Teeter if your pantry is bare. The cost per serving tilts upward because calvados is not a budget spirit, but this is a single-serving hot drink meant for one—the math is what it is. It does not reheat or keep; mix and drink immediately while hot.
