Ingredients
7 medium apples
1/2 cup water
1/4 cup granulated sugar
Directions
Rinse the apples under cool running water and pat them dry with a clean cloth.
Cut each apple into quarters, removing the stem and bottom. You may peel the apples with a vegetable peeler if desired for a smoother texture, though the skin can be left on for added fiber.
Place the apple quarters into a large saucepan and add the water.
Set the saucepan over medium-high heat and bring to a boil.
Once boiling, immediately reduce the heat to low and simmer gently for 15 to 20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apples are very soft and break apart easily with a spoon.
Stir in the sugar and continue heating, stirring frequently, until the sugar is completely dissolved, about 2 minutes.
For a chunky applesauce, mash with a potato masher or fork. For a smoother sauce, press through a food mill or blend with an immersion blender. Serve warm or allow to cool and refrigerate.
