Ingredients
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
½ cup peanut butter
9 cups crispy rice cereal squares
1½ cups confectioners' sugar
Directions
Place the chocolate chips and peanut butter in a saucepan and set over low heat. Stir constantly until the chocolate is completely melted and the mixture becomes smooth and well blended.
Remove the saucepan from heat. Add the crispy rice cereal squares to the chocolate-peanut butter mixture and stir thoroughly until every piece is evenly coated.
Transfer the coated cereal to a large bowl containing the confectioners' sugar. Toss gently but thoroughly until all pieces are dusted with sugar and no longer sticky.
Spread the finished puppy chow on parchment paper or a clean surface to cool and set for a few minutes before serving. Store in an airtight container.
Comments
Puppy Chow is a Charlotte-friendly snack with ingredients stocked at every major chain (Walmart, Food Lion, Harris Teeter, Kroger, ALDI all carry chocolate chips, peanut butter, rice cereal, and confectioners sugar). The 10-minute time is honest and accounts for melting, mixing, and coating. Cost per serving runs about 30-40 cents, driven mainly by peanut butter and chocolate, making it economical for a 24-serving batch. The only minor drawback is that it's best eaten fresh on the same day—it stales quickly and doesn't reheat well—so it demands finishing within hours of making.
