Ingredients
3 heads pak choi
sliced red chilli
Directions
Rinse the pak choi and pat dry. Slice each head lengthways in half, keeping the root end intact to hold the leaves together.
Bring water to a boil in a steamer pot or place a steamer basket over boiling water. Arrange the pak choi halves cut-side up in the steamer basket.
Steam for 3 minutes until the leaves are just tender and wilted but still retain their bright colour.
Transfer the steamed pak choi to a serving platter and arrange the sliced red chilli over the top. Serve immediately while warm.
Comments
Pak choi is inconsistently stocked across Charlotte chains—Food Lion and Harris Teeter carry it regularly, but Walmart, ALDI, and Kroger may not, meaning you risk a special trip or substitution to bok choy. The five-minute claim holds only if pak choi is already in your crisper and your steamer is running; factor in three to five minutes for heating water and trimming. At roughly $2–3 per pound and six servings, the cost per serving is reasonable, though red chilli availability (fresh or frozen) varies seasonally, and winter options narrow. This is a same-night side dish with no leftovers value, best suited as a quick vegetable for a larger meal rather than a standalone weeknight anchor.
