Ingredients
¼ cup softened butter (or dairy-free margarine)
½ teaspoon cardamom
1 teaspoon cinnamon
¼ teaspoon ground ginger
¼ teaspoon nutmeg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
¼ cup milk (or almond milk)
Directions
Place the softened butter in a large mixing bowl.
Add the cardamom, cinnamon, ground ginger, nutmeg, and vanilla extract to the butter.
Using an electric mixer on medium speed, blend all ingredients until the spices are fully incorporated and the mixture becomes smooth and creamy, about 2–3 minutes.
Gradually add the milk while mixing, stirring until the frosting reaches your desired spreading consistency. If the frosting is too thick, add a small amount of additional milk; if too thin, add powdered sugar a tablespoon at a time and blend again.
Use immediately on cooled cakes, cupcakes, or cookies.
Comments
Cardamom is the catch here—Harris Teeter carries it in the spice aisle, but many Food Lion and ALDI locations stock only the common ground spices, so Charlotte shoppers may need a second stop or should grab it while at Harris Teeter. The five-minute stated time is honest for mixing, though it assumes you have room-temperature butter ready and won't account for the minute or two to measure out whole cardamom pods and grind them fresh (store-bought ground cardamom works but fades quickly). At roughly $0.15 to $0.30 per serving, it's cheap, and all other ingredients are Charlotte-standard. This frosting keeps well in the fridge for a week and works equally on cupcakes or sheet cake, making it a solid make-ahead for batch baking.
