Ingredients

1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon baking powder

3¼ cups all-purpose flour

¼ cup brown sugar

¼ cup granulated sugar

½ teaspoon ground cinnamon

¼ teaspoon salt

3 tablespoons cold unsalted butter, diced

2 cups cold heavy whipping cream

1½ cups peeled and diced Granny Smith apples

1 cup white chocolate chips

½ cup caramel bits

raw sugar for topping

Directions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, brown sugar, granulated sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt until well combined.

  2. Add the diced cold butter to the flour mixture. Using a pastry cutter, two knives, or your fingertips, work the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs with some pea-sized pieces of butter remaining.

  3. Fold the diced apples, white chocolate chips, and caramel bits gently into the mixture with a wooden spoon, distributing them evenly throughout.

  4. Pour the cold heavy cream into the bowl all at once. Using a wooden spoon or a gentle hand, stir just until the ingredients are barely moistened. The mixture should look somewhat shaggy and crumbly.

  5. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured work surface or pastry mat. Gently knead the dough 3 to 4 times until it just barely holds together; do not overwork. Some cracks and rough patches are normal and desired.

  6. Divide the dough into 3 equal portions. Working with one portion at a time, gently pat it into a thick disk about 6 inches in diameter. Using a sharp knife, cut the disk into 8 equal triangular wedges.

  7. Arrange the scone triangles on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart. Sprinkle the top of each scone generously with raw sugar.

  8. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, until the scones are golden brown on top and a light golden color on the bottoms. Do not overbake.

  9. Remove from the oven and cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes, then transfer to a wire rack. Serve warm or at room temperature. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, or freeze for up to 3 months.

These scones check nearly every box for Charlotte shoppers: all ingredients are standard pantry and produce finds at Harris Teeter, Food Lion, Publix, Walmart, or ALDI. The cost per serving runs roughly $0.40–$0.50 given butter and cream as the main drivers, making a batch of 24 a genuine weeknight-scale project. The stated 35 minutes is honest for mixing, rolling, and baking, though two minutes of dicing one Granny Smith apple doesn't account for real prep flow. The batter comes together quickly and feeds a crowd or yields excellent same-day gift portions, but these are a same-night eat—they stale noticeably by day two—so plan accordingly if you're not serving them warm.
