A classic Irish coffee combining strong hot coffee, smooth Irish whiskey, and a layer of lightly whipped cream. The mugs are warmed first to keep the coffee hot, then brown sugar is stirred in before the whiskey is added. The whipped cream is poured gently over the back of a spoon to float on top, creating an elegant and warming cocktail drink.

Ingredients

4 cups strong brewed coffee

½ cup Irish whiskey

2 tablespoons light brown sugar

¼ cup heavy whipping cream

Chocolate shavings for garnish

Directions

  1. Pour hot water into each of four mugs and let them sit for 2 minutes to preheat. Discard the water from each mug.

  2. Add ½ tablespoon of light brown sugar to the bottom of each preheated mug.

  3. Pour 1 cup of hot strong coffee into each mug and stir well to completely dissolve the sugar.

  4. Pour 2 tablespoons of Irish whiskey into each mug and stir to combine.

  5. In a separate bowl, use an electric mixer or whisk by hand to beat the heavy cream until soft peaks form. The cream should be thick and creamy but still pourable.

  6. Hold a warm spoon just above the surface of the coffee in each mug and gently pour the whipped cream over the back of the spoon. The cream will float on top of the coffee, creating a distinct layer.

  7. Sprinkle chocolate shavings over the whipped cream as garnish. Serve immediately while hot.
