Ingredients

4 tsp cornstarch

2 tsp soy sauce

¾ lb beef tri-tip, thinly sliced across the grain

¼ cup fresh orange juice

2 tbsp oyster-flavored sauce

1 tbsp honey

1 tbsp sesame seeds

2 tbsp vegetable oil

1 tsp minced ginger

2 medium oranges, segmented

½ cup pineapple chunks

Directions

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together 2 teaspoons of cornstarch with the soy sauce until combined. Add the thinly sliced beef and toss to coat evenly. Let the beef marinate at room temperature for 10 minutes.

  2. While the beef marinates, prepare the sauce by combining the fresh orange juice, oyster sauce, honey, and remaining 2 teaspoons cornstarch in a small bowl. Stir well until the honey dissolves completely. Set aside.

  3. Heat a small dry skillet over medium heat. Add the sesame seeds and toast, shaking the pan frequently, until golden and fragrant, about 3 to 4 minutes. Transfer immediately to a plate to cool.

  4. Heat a large stir-fry pan or wok over high heat until very hot. Add the vegetable oil and swirl to coat the surface. Add the minced ginger and cook, stirring constantly, until fragrant, about 10 seconds. Add the marinated beef in a single layer and allow it to sit undisturbed for 30 seconds to begin caramelizing, then stir-fry, tossing frequently, until the edges are caramelized and the beef reaches an internal temperature of 145°F for medium-rare, about 2 to 3 minutes.

  5. Pour the reserved sauce over the beef and stir to combine. Continue cooking, stirring frequently, until the sauce comes to a gentle boil and thickens slightly, about 20 seconds.

  6. Add the orange segments and pineapple chunks to the pan and toss gently to combine. Cook for 30 seconds just to heat the fruit through.

  7. Transfer the sesame-orange beef to a serving platter, sprinkle generously with the toasted sesame seeds, and serve immediately.

This is a solid weeknight stir-fry that you can build entirely from a single Charlotte-area chain—Harris Teeter, Food Lion, Publix, Walmart, ALDI, or Kroger all stock every ingredient. The real cost driver is the beef and fresh orange; for three servings, budget $12–14 total, or about $4–5 per plate. The stated 30 minutes is honest for cooking, but assumes you have ginger and orange already prepped, so budget an extra 8 minutes for zesting and mincing. This is a high-heat, keep-moving dish that demands attention and reheats poorly (the cornstarch coating turns soggy), so it's a same-night meal best suited to people who can eat together on schedule.
