Ingredients

2 cups bread cubes (ciabatta, French, or other hearty bread)

1 1/2 cups cubed mozzarella or cheddar cheese

20 cherry tomato halves (about 10 whole cherry tomatoes)

2 leaves romaine lettuce, torn into small bite-sized pieces

10 wooden or metal skewers (8-10 inches long)

Directions

  1. If using wooden skewers, soak them in water for at least 30 minutes to prevent burning.

  2. Cut bread into bite-sized cubes, trim the mozzarella or cheddar cheese into cubes, halve the cherry tomatoes, and tear the romaine lettuce into small pieces.

  3. Thread ingredients onto each skewer in this repeating pattern: one cube of bread, one piece of torn lettuce, one cherry tomato half, one cube of cheese, and another cube of bread.

  4. Repeat the layering pattern 1–2 more times down the length of each skewer, depending on its size, until the skewer is evenly and attractively filled.

  5. Arrange the finished skewers on a serving platter and serve immediately with ranch dip, vegetable dip, or mustard for dipping.

Grocery List Plus Editorial Staff4.5

Every ingredient is in stock year-round at any Charlotte supermarket, and the total cost lands under two dollars for ten skewers, making it genuinely cheap. The ten-minute timer is honest: slicing bread and tomatoes, tearing lettuce, and threading skewers takes exactly that long with no hidden steps. This is a perfect party or lunchbox solution that requires zero cooking skill, travels well, and works equally fine served same-day or the next morning. The only reason this is not a five is that it is purely a vehicle—useful and economical, but not a meal on its own without soup or a side.
