Pan-seared halloumi cheese with a caramelized golden crust, topped with a vibrant warm strawberry and herb condiment made with fresh cilantro, mint, lime juice, and serrano chile. A bright, savory-sweet side dish that pairs well with grilled proteins or as part of a light meal.

Ingredients

4 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, divided

2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lime juice

2 teaspoons agave nectar

1 serrano chile, minced (seeds removed if desired)

freshly ground black pepper

6 ounces strawberries, hulled and sliced

8 ounces halloumi cheese, cut into 8 slices

2 tablespoons fresh cilantro, chopped

2 tablespoons fresh mint, chopped

Directions

  1. In a small bowl, whisk together 3 tablespoons of the olive oil, lime juice, agave nectar, minced serrano chile, and a generous pinch of freshly ground black pepper. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.

  2. Add the sliced strawberries to the dressing and gently toss to coat. Set the mixture aside at room temperature while you prepare the halloumi.

  3. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the remaining 1 tablespoon of olive oil and swirl to coat the pan evenly.

  4. Place the halloumi slices in the hot skillet in a single layer. Do not move them as they cook. Sear for 2–3 minutes until the bottoms develop a deep golden-brown crust.

  5. Carefully flip each slice and cook the other side for another 2–3 minutes, again without moving them, until a caramelized crust forms.

  6. Transfer the warm halloumi slices to a serving platter or individual plates. Top each slice with the strawberry and herb mixture, including the dressing.

  7. Finish by sprinkling the chopped fresh cilantro and mint over the top. Serve immediately while the cheese is still warm.

Halloumi is a reliable find at Harris Teeter, Food Lion, Publix, and Kroger, but the real cost driver here is the strawberries—out of season and expensive in winter months, or thin and pale even in summer at most Charlotte chains. The stated 45 minutes ignores prep work on four servings of fresh fruit and herb prep; expect closer to 60 minutes total. This is a showpiece dish that needs plating attention and doesn't reheat well, making it best for a weekend dinner when you have time and guests, not a weeknight family meal. The fresh cilantro and mint are standard supermarket finds, so no special trips, but you're paying premium dollars for a dish built on a fruit that North Carolina doesn't grow locally.
