Ingredients

1 teaspoon canola oil

3/4 cup chopped yellow onion

20 ounces ground turkey

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon chili powder

1 teaspoon ground mustard

1 teaspoon tomato paste

1/2 cup tomato sauce

1/4 cup root beer

1/4 cup chili sauce

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

4 hamburger buns, toasted

Directions

  1. Heat a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add the canola oil and allow it to warm until shimmering, about 1 minute.

  2. Add the chopped onion to the hot skillet and cook for 3 minutes, stirring occasionally, until softened and fragrant.

  3. Add the ground turkey to the skillet. Cook for 4 to 5 minutes, breaking it apart with a spoon and stirring frequently, until the turkey is completely cooked through with no pink remaining and reaches an internal temperature of 165°F.

  4. Stir in the garlic powder, chili powder, and ground mustard, mixing well to coat the turkey evenly. Cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.

  5. Add the tomato paste, tomato sauce, root beer, chili sauce, and Worcestershire sauce to the skillet. Stir all ingredients together until combined.

  6. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer and cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens slightly and flavors blend together.

  7. Place the bottom halves of the toasted hamburger buns on serving plates. Spoon the root beer turkey mixture evenly onto each bun bottom, then top with the bun tops. Serve immediately.
