Ingredients

2 tbsp butter, melted

8 oz cream cheese, softened

3⅞ oz chocolate instant pudding mix

1¾ cup cold milk

½ cup pecans, finely chopped

¾ cup powdered sugar

22 whole vanilla wafers, crushed

1½ cup whipped topping, thawed and divided

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F. In a small bowl, combine the crushed vanilla wafers with the finely chopped pecans and melted butter, stirring until well combined. Press this mixture firmly onto the bottom and up the sides of a 9-inch pie plate to form an even crust.

  2. Bake the crust in the preheated oven for 10 minutes until lightly golden. Remove from oven and allow to cool completely.

  3. In a medium bowl, beat the softened cream cheese and powdered sugar together using an electric mixer until smooth and well blended, about 1–2 minutes.

  4. Gently fold 1 cup of the thawed whipped topping into the cream cheese mixture until just combined. Spread this layer evenly over the bottom of the cooled crust.

  5. In another bowl, whisk together the chocolate pudding mix and cold milk for about 2 minutes until thickened and smooth. Carefully spoon the pudding mixture over the cream cheese layer.

  6. Cover the pie and refrigerate for several hours or overnight until firm. Just before serving, top with the remaining whipped topping.

Every ingredient is stocked at Harris Teeter, Food Lion, Walmart, ALDI, or Kroger—no special trips. The 210-minute time is honest: it requires real chilling between layers, so this is weekend or make-ahead dessert, not a weeknight impulse. At roughly $1.50 per serving, it's budget-friendly for a crowd, driven mainly by butter, cream cheese, and chocolate pudding mix, all competitively priced. Pecan mud pie reheats poorly and is best served same-night or within a day, which limits flexibility, but it's a true Southern classic that yields impressive results with zero fussy technique—just assembly and patience.
