Ingredients

1 tablespoon canola oil

1 pound fresh green beans, trimmed, blanched and dried

1 clove garlic, minced

1 to 2 teaspoons chili paste, depending on desired spice level

1 tablespoon soy sauce

1 tablespoon hoisin sauce

2 tablespoons water or chicken broth

1 teaspoon cornstarch

1 teaspoon water

Directions

  1. Heat a wok or large skillet over high heat until very hot. Reduce heat to medium-high and add the canola oil, swirling to coat the pan.

  2. Add the blanched green beans and minced garlic to the hot oil. Stir-fry for about 1 minute, tossing frequently to lightly toast the garlic.

  3. Stir in the chili paste, soy sauce, hoisin sauce, and water or broth. Mix well to coat the beans evenly. Cover the pan and cook for 1 minute.

  4. In a small bowl, whisk together the cornstarch and 1 teaspoon water to form a smooth slurry. Pour the slurry into the pan and stir constantly.

  5. Continue cooking and stirring for 1 to 2 minutes until the sauce thickens and coats the beans evenly, then transfer to a serving dish and serve immediately.
