Ingredients
¼ cup raw walnuts, coarsely chopped
3 medium apples (a mix of Gala and Fuji), peeled and coarsely chopped
¼ cup pitted dates, coarsely chopped
¼ cup honey
½ cup grape juice
1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
¼ teaspoon kosher salt
Directions
Peel the apples, remove the core, and coarsely chop them into bite-sized pieces. Place the chopped apples in a medium mixing bowl.
Add the coarsely chopped walnuts and pitted dates to the bowl with the apples.
Pour the honey and grape juice over the apple, walnut, and date mixture.
Add the apple cider vinegar, ground cinnamon, and kosher salt to the bowl.
Stir all ingredients together until well combined. The mixture should have a chunky, chunky consistency with visible pieces of fruit and nuts throughout.
Serve immediately, or cover and refrigerate until ready to use. The charoset can be made up to one day in advance.
Comments
Every ingredient is stocked at any Charlotte chain, and the cost per serving comes to roughly $1.50 if you buy store-brand honey and dates from the bulk section at Harris Teeter or Food Lion. The stated ten minutes is honest for chopping apples and walnuts, though allow an extra minute if your dates aren't already pitted. This is a same-night dish that loses appeal the next day as oxidation dulls the apple and the texture becomes mealy, but it's a classic Passover staple that works beautifully for a holiday meal or as a weekend spread.
