Ingredients

1 pound grass-fed ground sirloin

4 teaspoons barbecue sauce

1/4 teaspoon sea salt

1/2 cup crumbled blue cheese

4 large kale leaves

4 whole grain burger buns, split

Directions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the ground sirloin, barbecue sauce, and sea salt. Using your hands, gently mix the ingredients until just combined, then divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape each into a burger patty about 3/4 inch thick.

  2. Preheat your grill or grill pan to high heat. Place the patties on the hot grill and cook for 10 to 15 minutes, turning occasionally, until the internal temperature reaches 160°F. The exterior should be nicely browned.

  3. Top each cooked burger patty with 2 tablespoons of crumbled blue cheese, then transfer to a clean plate and cover loosely with aluminum foil to keep warm while you finish grilling the remaining components.

  4. Place the kale leaves directly on the grill grates and cook for 2 to 3 minutes, turning frequently, until the leaves become tender and develop light char marks. Remove from the grill and set aside.

  5. Place the burger bun halves cut-side down on the grill for about 30 seconds, until lightly toasted and warmed through. Remove from heat.

  6. To assemble, place one grilled kale leaf on the bottom half of each toasted bun, followed by one burger patty with blue cheese, then cap with the top bun half. Serve immediately while still warm.

The ingredients are straightforward and available at any Charlotte chain, with ground beef and burger buns around $3–4 for four sandwiches and kale under $2 at Food Lion or Kroger. Blue cheese is the only item requiring a deliberate stop in the specialty section, though Harris Teeter and Publix stock it routinely. The 35-minute time overlooks at least ten minutes of browning ground beef and char-grilling kale, putting honest prep closer to 45 minutes on a weeknight, which matters if you have kids waiting. The dish reheats unevenly—the burger stays good, but grilled kale turns mushy—so plan for same-night eating or separate storage of components.
