Ingredients

1 cup all-purpose flour

1/4 cup butter, softened

3/4 cup milk

2 tablespoons sugar

1 tablespoon baking powder

pinch of salt

Directions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt. Stir together until evenly distributed.

  2. Add the softened butter and milk to the dry ingredients.

  3. Mix gently with a wooden spoon or your fingertips until the mixture comes together into a soft, cohesive dough. Do not overmix; the dough should remain tender and slightly sticky.

  4. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured work surface and roll or pat it to approximately 1 inch thick.

  5. Using a fluted round cutter (about 2 inches in diameter), cut the dough into individual scones and place them on a parchment-lined baking tray, leaving space between each piece.

  6. Brush the tops of each scone lightly with a little milk for a golden finish.

  7. Bake in a preheated oven at 220°C (425°F) for 10 minutes, until the scones are golden brown on top.

  8. Remove from the oven and let cool for 2 minutes. Serve warm with butter and your favorite mixed fruit jam.
