These vegan-friendly caramel apple crisp bars combine tender spiced apples with a buttery oat and brown sugar topping, all bound together with a drizzle of caramel sauce. The crispy oat mixture forms both the base and crumble topping, creating a satisfying texture contrast with the soft apple filling. Perfect for a cozy dessert or snack.

Ingredients

1 cup Whole wheat flour

1.19 cup All-purpose flour

1 cup Old-fashioned rolled oats

1 cup Packed dark brown sugar

½ tsp Baking soda

½ tsp Ground cinnamon

⅛ tsp Ground allspice

⅛ tsp Ground nutmeg

½ tsp Kosher salt

10 tbsp Vegan margarine or unsalted butter, cut into small pieces

2 cup Firm apples, such as Granny Smith, peeled, cored, and diced

½ cup Vegan caramel sauce

Directions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F and position a rack in the center. Line an 8x8-inch baking dish with parchment paper and lightly coat it with nonstick cooking spray.

  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the whole wheat flour, 1 cup of all-purpose flour, rolled oats, packed brown sugar, baking soda, cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg, and kosher salt. Toss to blend evenly.

  3. Add the margarine pieces to the dry mixture and use your fingertips to rub them together quickly until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs. Press two-thirds of this crumb mixture firmly into the bottom of the prepared baking dish.

  4. Spread the diced apples evenly over the pressed crumb base.

  5. In a small bowl, whisk together the vegan caramel sauce and the remaining 3 tablespoons of all-purpose flour until smooth.

  6. Pour the caramel mixture evenly over the apples, then sprinkle the remaining crumb topping over the caramel layer.

  7. Bake for 30 to 40 minutes, until the top is lightly golden brown.

  8. Allow the bars to cool completely in the pan before cutting and serving, or serve while still warm for a gooey, delicious treat.

This recipe hits on availability and cost: whole wheat flour, oats, brown sugar, apples, and vegan margarine are stocked everywhere Charlotte shops, and the ingredient list skews inexpensive—you're looking at roughly $1.50 to $2.00 per serving depending on whether you buy bulk oats and basic caramel sauce. The stated 50 minutes is honest for bars that bake in a single pan with minimal active work, though assembly (mixing filling, pressing dough, spreading topping) takes a solid 15 to 20 minutes of hands-on time. North Carolina apples are seasonal (fall and early winter), so a spring or summer baker will pay a premium; buy local in autumn to make this sing. The bars keep well for days and reheat pleasantly in a low oven, making them a solid choice for meal prep or a bake-ahead dessert for a crowd.
