Ingredients
5 ounces tomato paste (5 ounces)
15 ounces tomato sauce (15 ounces)
2½ tablespoons apple cider vinegar
¼ cup brown sugar
2½ tablespoons bourbon whiskey
½ tablespoon worcestershire sauce (vegan-friendly)
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
¼ teaspoon sea salt
¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
1 teaspoon liquid smoke (optional)
Directions
In a small saucepan, combine the tomato paste, tomato sauce, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, bourbon whiskey, worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, sea salt, black pepper, and liquid smoke if using. Whisk all ingredients together until well blended.
Place the saucepan over medium heat. Bring the mixture to a gentle bubble, whisking occasionally, for about 5 minutes.
Reduce the heat to low and continue cooking for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. This allows the flavors to meld and develop depth.
Remove from heat and taste the sauce. Adjust seasonings as desired: add more whiskey for increased bourbon flavor, more brown sugar for sweetness, more vinegar for tang, or more liquid smoke for a stronger smoky note.
Transfer the sauce to a clean glass jar and allow it to cool completely to room temperature before sealing with a lid.
Store in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks or longer. Use as a condiment for grilled meats, appetizers, or any barbecue-inspired dish.
