Ingredients
¾ cup Granulated sugar
2 cups Fresh orange juice
1 Orange zest
¼ teaspoon Salt
2 cups Whole milk
Directions
In a medium bowl, whisk together the granulated sugar and salt. Pour in the fresh orange juice and whisk until the sugar is completely dissolved.
Stir in the orange zest and whole milk until evenly combined. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or until the mixture is thoroughly chilled.
Transfer the chilled mixture to an ice cream maker and churn according to the manufacturer's instructions until the sherbet reaches a soft-serve consistency.
Transfer the churned sherbet to a freezer-safe container and place in the freezer for 4 to 6 hours, or overnight, until it reaches a firm, scoopable consistency.
Remove the sherbet from the freezer 5 to 10 minutes before serving to allow it to soften slightly, making it easier to scoop.
Comments
This is a straightforward frozen dessert using ingredients you can grab at any Charlotte supermarket—sugar, fresh oranges, milk, and salt are staples at Harris Teeter, Food Lion, or Walmart. The real time commitment is the 24 hours of freezing, which the 1440-minute figure honestly reflects, but active hands-on work is minimal, maybe 10 minutes to juice and mix. At roughly 40–50 cents per serving for the ingredients, this is genuinely cheap and perfect for a hot Southern evening. It doesn't reheat, so it's a same-night dessert, and it's fussy only if you lack an ice cream maker; a blender works fine but requires more stirring midway through.
