Tender asparagus spears bundled with smoky bacon and grilled until the bacon crisps and the asparagus develops delicate char marks. A simple, protein-rich side dish that's both elegant and deeply satisfying, finished with a light seasoning of salt and pepper.

Ingredients

6 slices bacon

2 bunches fresh asparagus, white stems trimmed

Salt, to taste

Black pepper, to taste

Directions

  1. Preheat your grill to medium-high heat, allowing it to come to full temperature for 5 minutes.

  2. While the grill is heating, divide the trimmed asparagus into 6 bundles with 3 to 4 spears each. Wrap each bundle tightly with one slice of bacon, allowing the ends of the bacon to overlap slightly on one side to hold it secure.

  3. Once the grill grates are hot, place the bacon-wrapped asparagus bundles directly on the grill. Cook for approximately 5 minutes until the bacon begins to crisp and char marks appear on that side.

  4. Carefully turn each bundle over and continue grilling for another 5 minutes until the bacon is fully crispy and the asparagus is tender with light charring on both sides.

  5. Transfer the grilled bundles to a serving plate. Season immediately with salt and black pepper to taste while still hot, then serve right away.

Asparagus and bacon are reliably stocked at all major Charlotte chains including Harris Teeter, Food Lion, Publix, Walmart, ALDI, and Kroger, with no specialty stops required. The stated 20 minutes is honest for grilling once prep is done, though wrapping asparagus in bacon adds about 5 minutes of hands-on work that should be acknowledged. Cost per serving runs roughly $2.50 to $3.50 depending on bacon quality, which is reasonable for a side dish. This is a simple grilled side that reheats adequately and pairs well with any protein, though it's best served fresh off the grill and doesn't store or reheat as well as heartier sides.
