Juicy seasoned turkey burgers topped with melted Swiss cheese and slow-caramelized sweet onions, served on toasted buns. The onions are cooked low and slow to develop deep, sweet flavor that pairs beautifully with the lean turkey.

Ingredients

1/2 tablespoon olive oil

1 large sweet onion (such as Walla Walla), sliced 1/4 inch thick

Salt to taste

Water as needed (1-2 tablespoons)

3 frozen seasoned turkey burger patties

3 slices Swiss cheese

3 hamburger buns

Directions

  1. Heat the olive oil in a large non-stick skillet over medium-low heat. Add the sliced onion and cook for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, to begin softening.

  2. Season the onions lightly with salt and continue cooking uncovered for another 20 minutes (30 minutes total from the start), stirring every 5 to 10 minutes. The goal is to caramelize the onions slowly—they should turn deep golden brown. If they appear dry at any point, add 1 to 2 tablespoons of water. If they stick to the pan, add a small amount of additional olive oil. Keep the caramelized onions warm on low heat.

  3. While the onions are cooking, preheat your grill to medium heat. Once hot, lightly brush or spray both sides of the frozen turkey burger patties with a thin coating of oil.

  4. Place the turkey burgers on the grill about 4 inches above the heat source. Grill for 8 minutes on the first side without moving them.

  5. Carefully flip the burgers and grill for 7 minutes on the second side. Check that the center of each burger reaches an internal temperature of 165°F using a meat thermometer.

  6. Remove the turkey burgers from the grill and immediately top each one with a slice of Swiss cheese. Allow the cheese to melt from the residual heat.

  7. Toast the hamburger buns on the grill or in a toaster until lightly golden.

  8. Place each cheese-topped turkey burger on a toasted bun and generously top with a scoop of the warm caramelized onions. Serve immediately.
