Ingredients

6 slices bacon

1 baguette, sliced into 1/4-inch rounds

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 clove garlic, peeled

2 cups fresh basil, packed

1/2 cup fresh basil, chopped for garnish

12 grape tomatoes, halved

Kosher salt, to taste

1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

3/4 cup mayonnaise

2 tablespoons olive oil

Directions

  1. Place the 2 cups of fresh basil, minced garlic, lemon juice, and salt into a food processor. Blend until the mixture is completely smooth and creamy. Taste and adjust salt as needed.

  2. Transfer the basil mixture to a small bowl and fold in the mayonnaise until fully combined, creating a vibrant basil mayonnaise.

  3. Arrange baguette slices on a large baking sheet. Brush both sides lightly with olive oil.

  4. Toast the baguette slices in a 375°F oven for about 8-10 minutes, turning halfway through, until golden and crispy.

  5. While the bread toasts, cook the bacon in a skillet over medium-high heat until crispy, about 6-8 minutes. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate and break into small pieces when cooled.

  6. Rub each warm crostini lightly with the peeled garlic clove, allowing the texture of the bread to grate the garlic for maximum flavor.

  7. Spread approximately 1 teaspoon of basil mayonnaise onto each crostini.

  8. Top each crostini with a piece of bacon and two halves of grape tomato.

  9. Garnish with the fresh chopped basil just before serving. Arrange on a serving platter and serve immediately while the crostini are still warm and crispy.

All ingredients are stocked at every Charlotte grocer—bacon, baguette, and fresh basil are standard fare at Harris Teeter, Kroger, and Food Lion. At roughly $18-22 total for 24 crostini, the cost per piece runs 75 cents to under a dollar, reasonable for an appetizer. The stated 40 minutes is honest for slicing, toasting, and mayo prep, though a home cook will need to account for bacon cooling time. This is a party-mode recipe that makes sense as a passed appetizer and does not reheat well once assembled, so it demands same-night service and careful timing around other dishes.
