A traditional New Orleans Creole after-dinner coffee cocktail infused with the warmth of spices, citrus, and premium spirits. Strong coffee is enhanced with cinnamon, cloves, and long peels of orange and lemon, then enriched with brandy and orange liqueur for a sophisticated, aromatic drink that's best served warm in small cups.

Ingredients

3 cups strong brewed coffee

1 navel orange peel in a long spiral

1 lemon peel in a long spiral

12 whole cloves

2 cinnamon sticks

½ cup brandy

¼ cup orange liqueur

Directions

  1. Brew 3 cups of strong coffee and set aside. If using a traditional preparation, have a heavy-bottomed pot or heat-safe serving vessel ready.

  2. Carefully peel a navel orange and a lemon in long, unbroken spirals. Set the peels aside and reserve the fruit for other use.

  3. In a heavy pot or serving vessel over medium heat, combine the brandy and orange liqueur. Add the 12 whole cloves and 2 cinnamon sticks to the spirits.

  4. Gently warm the mixture for 2–3 minutes until fragrant, stirring occasionally. Do not allow it to boil. Carefully add one long spiral of orange peel and one long spiral of lemon peel to the pot.

  5. Slowly pour the hot brewed coffee into the pot with the spiced spirits, stirring gently to combine. The mixture will become aromatic and warming.

  6. Ladle the Café Brûlot into small serving cups, ensuring each cup receives a portion of the spiced liquid. Garnish with a small piece of cinnamon stick or a citrus peel spiral if desired. Serve immediately while hot.
