Ingredients

1 package devil's food cake mix

1 large egg

3 tablespoons vegetable oil

1/4 cup water

42 Rolo candies

1/2 cup chopped hazelnuts

Directions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F.

  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the devil's food cake mix, egg, vegetable oil, and water. Stir until the ingredients are fully incorporated; the mixture should be thick and somewhat sticky.

  3. Using a spoon, scoop tablespoon-sized portions of dough and roll each into a ball between your palms.

  4. Press one Rolo candy into the center of each dough ball, then gently reshape the dough around the candy to seal it completely.

  5. Pour the chopped hazelnuts into a shallow dish. Dip the top of each cookie into the hazelnuts to coat lightly.

  6. Arrange the cookies on ungreased baking sheets, spacing them about 2 inches apart.

  7. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes, until the cookies are set but still slightly soft.

  8. Remove from the oven and let the cookies cool on the baking sheets for 2 minutes, then transfer them to wire racks to cool completely.

  9. Store cooled cookies in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

This recipe costs about 45 cents per cookie and hits Harris Teeter, Food Lion, or Walmart without a special trip—all carry devil's food cake mix, eggs, oil, and Rolo candies. The 45-minute stated time is honest; these are quick-mixing drop cookies that bake in under 15 minutes. The real caveat is hazelnuts: a two-pound bag at Harris Teeter or Kroger runs $8–10, and you'll use only a small handful, making the per-cookie nut cost steep unless you already have them on hand or plan to use the rest soon. They're fussy in one way—the caramel center melts easily during baking, so oven temperature matters—but they reward that care and store well in an airtight container for a week, making them excellent for a bake-ahead weekend project rather than a weeknight.
