Ingredients

2 cup milk chocolate chips

2 tbsp vegetable shortening

½ cup butter

½ cup crunchy peanut butter

1 cup confectioners' sugar

⅔ cup graham cracker crumbs

Directions

  1. Combine milk chocolate chips and shortening in a small saucepan. Heat over low heat, stirring occasionally, until completely melted and smooth, about 3 to 5 minutes.

  2. Arrange 30 paper muffin cups in a stack. Using a small brush, coat the inside of each cup with about 1 teaspoon of the melted chocolate, spreading it to approximately 1/8-inch thickness and bringing it almost to the rim without going over the edge. Refrigerate the coated cups until the chocolate is firm.

  3. In a separate saucepan, combine butter and crunchy peanut butter. Heat over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until both are melted and well blended, about 4 to 6 minutes.

  4. Remove the peanut butter mixture from heat. Stir in the confectioners' sugar and graham cracker crumbs until fully incorporated and the mixture holds together.

  5. Press approximately 1/2 tablespoon of the peanut butter filling into the bottom of each chocolate-lined cup.

  6. Top each filled cup with about 1/2 teaspoon of the remaining melted chocolate, spreading it gently to seal and cover the filling completely.

  7. Place the filled cups on a baking sheet and freeze for at least 2 hours until very firm.

  8. Carefully peel the paper cups away from each peanut butter cup. Store the finished candies in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

Every ingredient lands at any major Charlotte grocery: chocolate chips, shortening, and peanut butter are staples at Harris Teeter, Food Lion, Walmart, and ALDI; butter and confectioners sugar are universal; graham cracker crumbs cost a dollar or less. The stated 150 minutes is honest—tempering chocolate, setting layers, and cooling time demand patience rather than active work, so a weeknight batch works if you start early or split it across two days. At roughly 30 cents per serving (driven by chocolate and peanut butter), this beats any store-bought premium peanut butter cup by far. These reheat and ship beautifully, and the technique scales up for holiday gifts without fussiness.
