Ingredients
5 apples, peeled and sliced
1 cup blackberries
4 tablespoons butter or coconut oil
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 tablespoon water
½ cup sugar
¼ cup old-fashioned oats
¾ cup whole wheat pastry flour
¼ teaspoon ground ginger, cardamom, cinnamon, or nutmeg (or a blend)
Directions
Preheat your oven to 350°F. Spray four ramekin bowls or an 8-inch pie plate with cooking spray and place on a large baking sheet. Set aside.
In a large saucepan, combine the sliced apples, sugar, lemon juice, and water. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the apples become tender, about 8–10 minutes.
Divide the warm apple mixture among the prepared ramekins or transfer to the pie plate. Top evenly with the fresh blackberries.
In a separate large bowl, whisk together the flour, oats, remaining sugar, and your choice of ground spice. Add the cold butter or coconut oil and use a pastry blender, fork, or your fingertips to work it in until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Sprinkle the crumbly topping evenly over the fruit in each ramekin or over the pie plate.
Bake for 25–30 minutes, until the topping is golden brown and the fruit filling is bubbly around the edges.
Remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy warm, optionally with vanilla ice cream.
