Ingredients
4 medium apples, cored and sliced
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1 cup uncooked rolled oats
1/2 cup butter or margarine, softened
Cooking spray for greasing
Directions
Preheat your oven to 350°F. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before beginning.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, baking soda, cinnamon, brown sugar, and rolled oats.
Stir the dry ingredients together until well blended.
Add the softened butter to the bowl.
Using two table knives or a pastry cutter, cut the butter into the dry mixture until the texture resembles coarse breadcrumbs or small pebbles.
Lightly coat the bottom and sides of a 9x13-inch baking dish with cooking spray.
Spread half of the crumb mixture evenly across the bottom of the prepared baking dish, pressing it down gently.
Core the apples by removing the center seed cavity, then slice them into thin, even slices.
Layer the apple slices evenly over the crumb base in the baking dish.
Sprinkle the remaining crumb mixture evenly over the apple layer.
Bake in the preheated oven for 40 to 45 minutes, until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender when pierced with a fork.
Remove from the oven and let cool for 5 to 10 minutes. Cut into 24 equal squares while still warm.
Serve warm or at room temperature. The bars are delicate, so handle them gently as they may crumble slightly.
