Ingredients
4 cups all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
4 tablespoons butter, softened
1 cup raisins
1 large egg, lightly beaten
2 cups buttermilk
Directions
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a round baking pan or Dutch oven.
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, salt, and baking soda until evenly combined.
Add the softened butter to the dry ingredients and use your fingertips to rub it in until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs.
Stir in the raisins until they are scattered throughout the dough.
Make a well in the center of the mixture and add the beaten egg and buttermilk. Using a wooden spoon, stir until a shaggy dough comes together.
Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and gently knead for just a few turns until it comes together as a cohesive mass; do not overwork.
Form the dough into a round loaf and place in the prepared baking pan. Using a sharp knife, score a cross into the top of the loaf about ¼ inch deep.
Bake for 50 to 60 minutes, until the loaf is golden brown and a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean.
Remove from the oven and let cool in the pan for 10 minutes before turning out onto a wire rack to cool completely.
