Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

2 teaspoons baking powder

1/4 teaspoon baking soda

1/4 teaspoon salt

2 tablespoons sugar

2/3 cup low-fat buttermilk

3 1/3 tablespoons vegetable oil

Directions

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water before beginning.

  2. Preheat your oven to 450°F.

  3. In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and sugar until well combined.

  4. In a small bowl, stir the buttermilk and vegetable oil together until blended.

  5. Pour the buttermilk mixture into the flour mixture and stir gently until just combined and no dry streaks remain.

  6. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured work surface and knead gently 10 to 12 times, being careful not to overwork the dough.

  7. Roll or pat the dough to an even ¾-inch thickness.

  8. Using a 2-inch round biscuit cutter or cookie cutter, cut out rounds, dipping the cutter lightly in flour before each cut to prevent sticking.

  9. Place the cut biscuits on an ungreased baking sheet, spacing them about an inch apart.

  10. Bake in the preheated 450°F oven for 12 minutes or until the biscuits are golden brown on top.

  11. Remove from the oven and serve warm.
