Ingredients
4 ounces cream cheese, room temperature
1 cup Nutella or chocolate spread
1 roll frozen phyllo dough, thawed (18 sheets)
Nonstick cooking spray
2 cups sliced bananas
2 cups sliced strawberries
½ cup chocolate syrup
2 tablespoons powdered sugar for dusting
Directions
Preheat your oven to 375°F. In a small bowl, beat together the room-temperature cream cheese and Nutella until the mixture is smooth and well combined.
Lay one sheet of thawed phyllo dough on a clean work surface. Cover the remaining phyllo sheets with plastic wrap and a damp towel to keep them moist. Lightly spray the first sheet with nonstick cooking spray.
Layer a second phyllo sheet directly on top of the first and spray it lightly with cooking spray.
Add a third phyllo sheet on top and spray lightly with cooking spray.
Using a sharp knife, cut the three-layer phyllo stack crosswise into 4 equal rectangles.
Place about 1 tablespoon of the Nutella cream cheese filling approximately 1 inch from one end of each rectangle. Fold the phyllo end over the filling at a 45-degree angle, then continue folding in a triangular motion (like folding a flag) to fully enclose the filling until you reach the end of the rectangle.
Transfer each turnover seam-side down to a parchment-lined baking sheet. Repeat the layering, cutting, and folding process with the remaining phyllo sheets and filling until you have 24 turnovers total.
Bake in the preheated 375°F oven for approximately 15 minutes until the turnovers are golden brown and crispy.
Remove from the oven and let cool briefly. Dust the warm turnovers generously with powdered sugar. Top each with sliced bananas and strawberries, then drizzle with chocolate syrup before serving.
Comments
Phyllo dough is the sticking point: Food Lion and Harris Teeter carry it reliably, but ALDI and Walmart do not stock it consistently, so you may need an extra stop. The ingredient list is short and inexpensive otherwise—cream cheese, Nutella, bananas, and strawberries are everyday items across all chains, and baking them cuts down on oil costs compared to frying. The 45-minute stated time is honest if you're comfortable working quickly with phyllo (it dries out fast), but a first-time user should budget 60 minutes and expect some breakage. This works well for a crowd or meal-prep batch, reheats adequately in a warm oven, and appeals to kids and adults alike, though the texture won't be as crisp the second day.
